SAIM Residency Program

Our program offers a unique blend of clinician scientist training with structured didactic rounds and a robust caseload to facilitate the development of fantastic internists

TRAINING EXCEPTIONAL INTERNISTS.

With the support of five SAIM diplomates, four SAIM technicians, one SAIM service coordinator, and a residency class of six trainees, the residency program at UW offers a balanced caseload for learning and adequate supervision for the development of crucial skills. The program has a structure conducive to continual learning, with adequate research blocks and elective time to pursue your particular areas of interest.

Clinical experience

Being one of the busiest services in the hospital, SAIM provides residents a diverse caseload with everything from new hyperthyroid patients for radioiodine therapy to tertiary referrals for interventional radiology procedures. Learn more about the daily clinical life of residents in our FAQ page

Research experience

As an academic research institution, we believe in the importance of research training for our residents. To that end, each resident completes a prospective study during their time at UW to satisfy the ACVIM publication requirement. We provide bi-weekly, research-focused rounds to aid in your growth as a clinician scientist.

Teaching experience

One of the best parts of an academic residency is the chance to teach as you learn! Residents work with students on our clinical rotation, in preclinical laboratories, and in the classroom. Additionally, residents present at 1-2 local continuing education conferences during their training.

Weekly didactic rounds

Each week residents participate in ACVIM board preparation rounds on Tuesday, journal club on Thursday, and research/clinical pathology/morbidity and mortality rounds on Fridays. These resident-driven rounds allow growth in knowledge and areas of interest.

Boards preparation

All SAIM residents receive protected time to study for the general exam and certifying exam. Four weeks are provided during the second year and five weeks during the third year allow ample time to prepare and ensure a positive boards experience.

Work-Life balance

Residents are provided and are encouraged to take one week of protected vacation time each semester. Even if you're not traveling, this time away allows you to recharge and enjoy all that Madison has to offer. Learn more about how Madison fits your lifestyle here.
